Large Rawhide Laced Clay Olla Tarahumara Style Southwest Pottery 14in

Large hand-built-style earthenware olla pottery vessel featuring dramatic natural-looking black fire-clouding and an unusual rawhide-laced exterior. The substantial 14-inch size, rounded body, flared neck and dimensional hide lattice make this an impressive Southwestern piece.  The construction and overall appearance closely resemble documented pottery associated with the Rarámuri, also commonly called Tarahumara, of northern Mexico. Traditional Rarámuri pottery is formed by hand using coiled clay and traditionally open-fire fired, creating the irregular smoky black, gray and terracotta coloration seen on many examples. This vessel is unmarked and has no accompanying provenance, so the Tarahumara/Rarámuri attribution should be considered stylistic rather than independently authenticated.  Sold as is. The rawhide/sinew-style lacing is dry, aged and uneven, with several loose, frayed, stretched or broken ends and areas detached from the pierced hide collars, as pictured. Rim shows minor wear/nicks.
